Kathmandu. The Nepal Trade Union Congress has stepped up efforts for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of citizens affected by the sudden and devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River area of Rasuwa.
An emergency meeting of the National Committee of the Nepal Trade Union Congress, chaired by President Yogendra Kumar Kunwar on August 28, 2026 (Bhadra 11, 2083 BS), decided to form various committees to support the relief and rescue efforts.
Trade Union Congress General Secretary Ajay Kumar Rai said in a statement that the meeting made six decisions and put forward five demands to the government.
According to General Secretary Rai, the meeting formed a Disaster Management Committee under the coordination of Vice President Radhika Kuikel to collect data on the floods and coordinate relief and rescue efforts. It also formed a Disaster Management Subcommittee under the coordination of Deputy General Secretary Janardan Bhattarai to support the rescue of flood victims. Similarly, an Economic Subcommittee under the coordination of Treasurer Sanjay Kumar Dahal was formed to collect financial assistance for flood victims and contribute it to the Nepal Government’s Relief Fund. The meeting also decided to mobilize all its networks for relief collection.
Rai said the organization has decided to collect contributions through a centralized system and deposit the funds into the government’s relief fund. Office-bearers of the Trade Union Congress will contribute Rs. 5,000 each, central committee members Rs. 2,000 each, while each provincial committee, affiliated union and district committee will contribute one rupee per member.
Expressing grief over the devastating floods, the organization has put forward several demands to the government. It has demanded that the search for and rescue of missing citizens and workers be given the highest priority and made more effective; that food, drinking water, medicines, temporary shelter, clothing and other essential relief materials be provided immediately; and that affected workers and their families receive immediate relief, while ensuring the protection of employment, wages, social security and other labor rights.
It has also demanded immediate provision of appropriate relief, compensation and necessary social security to the families of citizens and workers who lost their lives or remain missing.
The Trade Union Congress has further called for strengthening early warning systems, safe workplaces, rescue mechanisms and disaster management systems to ensure the safety of workers employed in high-risk areas.
The statement also said that, in this hour of national disaster, the Trade Union Congress remains fully committed to working together with the government, local governments, social partners, workers’ organizations and the wider citizen community to provide necessary support for rescue, relief and rehabilitation. The meeting also decided to form and mobilize a Disaster Management Committee for this purpose.
